Invited to the ‘Swords of Winter’ teaching event in Godalming, our own Maria Makarova taught an intensive workshop on the use of the Zwerchau, one of ‘master strikes’ in the Liechtenauer longsword tradition. Starting with the basics of Zwerchau body mechanics and using it to counter strikes from above, then continuing with drills demonstrating the application of the Zwerch as a part of compound attacks, as well as counters to them. We are given to understand that class participants were really engaged, and continued exploring different variations of the drills well after the class had ended.
